Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Instant ramen and influencers: Inside the world of South Korean convenience stores
There are no fewer than 55,200 convenience stores in South Korea, about one for every 950 people. In Japan, whose population is more than twice as many as South Korea, there are nearly the same number of convenience stores. Part of the reason South Korea has so many convenience stores is that around half of its 52 million population live in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, and over 80% live in urban centers. Also, over one-third of South Korea’s households are single residents, who tend to shop for food and daily necessities as needed at a convenient location or order online. Convenience stores in South Korea not only sell food, drinks, and daily items but also provide space to eat the food and drinks they buy, payment services, and ATMs. Furthermore, there are so many video clips on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram that show off in-store experience and reviews of the items they sell. Since those convenience store shoppers are very keen on the latest trends and fads, influencers and marketers use convenience stores as a prime location and sources for video making. How convenient!
