Topic Reading-Vol.4413-5/24/2024

Dear MEL Topic Readers,
The latest list of top US baby names has a few surprises
The five most popular baby names in the USA back in 2000 were Emma, Olivia, Isabella, Ava, and Sophia for girls and Noah, Ethan, Jacob, Liam, and Logan for boys.
In 2023, they were Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, and Sophia for girls and Liam, Noah, Oliver, James, and Elijah for boys.
As the Latino population increases in the USA, names of Latin origin become more popular. For example, a boy name Mateo ascended to the 6th on the popularity list from #11 in 2022. Mateo is a name of Spanish origin meaning "gift of God." The English version of Mateo is Matthew, a name of Hebrew origin, the name of one of Jesus's twelve disciples. A girl name Olivia is also a Latin name meaning “olive tree”, the feminine alternative to the boy’s Oliver. Also, pop culture and social media, such as TikTok, Instagram, and online dramas influence baby names. In the past, the popular names changed gradually but nowadays, they change faster due to demographic and social influences.
