Topic Reading-Vol.4329-3/1/2024

Dear MEL Topic Readers,
This is the greatest risk factor of death in people with obesity, according to a new study
According to a new study on 400,000 people from a UK database, loneliness, or social isolation is a major risk factor for poor health outcomes, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. In fact, the risk factor of social isolation was found to be greater than depression, anxiety, and other lifestyle factors like alcohol, exercise, and diet. Also, a 2023 study found that people who felt socially isolated were more likely to die early than those who didn’t. While most of us feel lonely from time to time, many of us have the chance to overcome or forget the loneliness when we interact or have fun with others. But if there isn’t such an opportunity, the loneliness becomes permanent and could become a form of chronic stress. All in all, maintaining a social network or interaction is as important as exercising regularly and eating healthily. Do online social networks work as well as face-to-face interactions?
Read the article and learn about the health risks of being lonely.
