Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Opinion: Why Iran hates America
The Persian Empire once ruled territories from modern-day Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Turkey, and parts of Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. In the early 20th century, Iran underwent significant political changes, including the Constitutional Revolution of 1905-1911, which established a constitutional monarchy and paved the way for greater political participation and modernization. In 1953, the USA and UK staged a coup against the democratically elected prime minister and gave the ruling power back to the Shah. In 1979, the Shar was overthrown by the Islamic Revolution, and the Islamic Republic of Iran was established. After failing the attempt to rescue the hostages in the embassy in Teheran, the US started supporting Iraq in the Iran-Iraq War between 1980 and 1988. No wonder why the relationship between the USA and Iran has been hostile for decades. To make things worse, US Middle East policies change from President to President. Also, Iran’s development of nuclear weapons has been a major concern for the USA and its Middle East ally, Israel. Will there be any means to improve the relationship between the two countries?
Read the article and learn about the complex issues that lie between the two countries.
