Dear MEL School’s Topic Readers,
Japan approves record 4.98 trillion yen
defense budget
Though it is just under three percentage
points increase, a boost in defense spending seems to have brought attention from
its neighboring countries, particularly China. Japan’s new defense budget
amounts 4.98 trillion yen out of the total of 96 trillion yen 2015 budget. The amount
represents a little over five per cent of the total budget or 10% of the projected
tax revenue. It is also within the unofficial defense budget guideline, which
is less than 1% of the GDP. However, some still worry that Japan is moving toward
militarism from the long-held pacifist discipline.
