Dear MEL Topic Readers,
'Their resilience is a lesson to us all': The maritime lions hunting
seals on the beach
Desert lions are lions that have adapted to live in the harsh desert environments
in Namibia, in the southwest of Africa. Desert lions are leaner with longer
legs than other lions to help them travel vast distances and have slightly
thicker coats to handle both hot days and cold nights. They feed on a
variety of prey, such as antelopes, ostriches, and giraffes, and get most of
their water from the blood and meat of their prey. There are only around 80-100
desert lions in Namibia, and about a dozen of them now live along the coast to
hunt seals. They moved from the arid Namib Desert, searching for food, and
adapted to the new habitat, the beach. Indeed, climate change has forced the
lions to change their diet from animal meat to seafood and habitat from desert
to the beach for survival. After reaching the end of the land, where else can
these beach lions go?
Read the article and learn about how desert lions have adapted to their
new life in Namibia.
