Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Like no other commute on the planet: Inside Saudi Arabia’s dazzling
$22-billion metro system
Located in the central region of the Arabian Peninsula, Riyadh is the
capital and the most populous city of Saudi Arabia. Its central location makes
it relatively accessible to the entire kingdom. To improve the accessibility of
the metro area with nearly eight million dwellers, a new, extensive, and
driverless metro system started its service last year. The Riyadh Metro
features six lines covering over 170 kilometers with 85 stations. Each station
is uniquely architecturally designed. For example, located in the historic
area, Qasr Al Hokm station has become a landmark itself. It spreads across
seven floors, connected by 17 elevators and 46 escalators, and blends the history
and modernity of the capital city. Since Saudi Arabia is a strict Islamic
society, the trains are divided into three types of carriages: singles for men,
family for women or families, and first-class. Be warned. Consumption of food and
drinks is prohibited on the train. Saudi Arabia has historic monuments and modern
skyscrapers in the desert, and a state-of-the-art metro system underground.

Arabia.
