Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Amazon ends working from home for office staff
Before the coronavirus pandemic, most workers worked with others face-to-face
in their workplaces. During the pandemic, many businesses adopted working from
home (WFH) policy, allowing workers to work from home and shrank office spaces.
After the pandemic, some businesses went back to the work-in-the-office policy
while others kept the WFH or introduced a hybrid work policy, a combination of
home and office. There are pros and cons for each working style depending on
the nature of the work. Flexibility, increased focus, no commute, and cost savings
are some of the benefits of WHF for both employees and employers. On the other
hand, working in the office brings advantages like face-to-face collaboration,
networking opportunities, separation of work and home life, and immediate
access and support. While many workers prefer WFH or the hybrid work style,
some corporate executives believe employees are more productive when they work with
others in the office. Amazon, which employs over 1.5 million globally, has announced
that the company has decided to bring its corporate staff back into the office despite
the protests by its office workers who prefer working from home. Also, a
delivery service provider United Parcel Service (UPS), and computer giant DELL
both now demand full-time office attendance. What about the environmental
impacts as more workers commute on the road, busses, and trains?
