Dear MEL School’s
Topic Readers,
Scotland votes for
union at golf's ancient club as women win membership
Another historic
decision was made on the day a referendum took place in Scotland to decide whether
the country to stay as part of the UK or go for independence after 300 years of
union.
The Royal &
Ancient Club of St. Andrews, one of the most famous and prestigious golf clubs
in the world, finally abandoned its men-only membership policy to allow women
to join. The club had been closed only to gentlemen for as long as 260 years,
about the same length of time as the Tokugawa Shognate closed Japan to any
foreign countries but Dutch.
It seems to take a
lot of time to make any significant changes in Scotland, doesn’t it? Well, the
question might be, “What is significant to them?”
Enjoy reading the
article and seeing the short video of this historic move in Scotland.
