Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Apple launches $229.95 iPhone Pocket ‘sock’ to widespread bemusement
In most places, when you buy a pair of eyeglasses, you’ll almost always
receive a case free of charge. The cheapest new iPhone 16E costs $600, but doesn’t
come with a case or a bag. Instead, Apple offers a short sock and a long sock
to carry your iPhone with a price tag of $149.95 and $229.95, respectively. The
newly introduced iPhone Pocket features a ribbed open structure with the
qualities of the original pleats by ISSEY MIYAKE. According to Apple, it fully
encloses any iPhone, expanding to fit more of a user’s everyday items. When
stretched, the open textile subtly reveals its contents and allows the user to look
at their iPhone display. It can be handheld, tied onto bags, or worn directly
on the body. Apple offers eight colors for the short strap design and three for
the long strap version. This colorful sock seems like another way to carry and show
off your iPhone. But how soon will we see knockoffs at a hundredth of the iPhone
Pocket’s price?

at a price of an economical smartphone.
