Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Here’s how long it takes for your body to recover from food poisoning
Food poisoning, also known as foodborne illness, is a condition caused
by consuming contaminated food or beverages by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or
toxins. Common bacteria are salmonella and E. coli. They multiply in food and
produce toxins at a certain temperature range. The symptoms of food poisoning
vary depending on the type of contaminant, the amount, and the person’s
physical condition, and common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach
pain, fever, and fatigue. Also, the loss of fluids through vomiting and
diarrhea can cause dehydration. Such symptoms could occur within hours or days from
the food intake, and recovery could take a day to a week depending on the poisoning
and individual. Once poisoned, your body needs to flush out the toxins, which
could take hours to two days. It is important to keep your body hydrated and
avoid seasoned food or dairy during the recovery period. You may like it or
not, in general, the more severe the symptoms are, the shorter the duration is.
