Dear MEL
Topic Readers,
Pearl
Harbor Attack, December 7th 1941
On
this day three-quarter century ago, the U.S. military base in Pearl Harbor in
Hawaii was attacked by hundreds of Japanese war planes. As many as 2,000 US
service men were killed and many others were wounded. It was the beginning of
the Pacific Theater of World War II which changed the political and geographical
map of Asia.
(December
8th in Japan time because of the International Date Line)
45
months after the attack, the US dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki to cease the war as well as to show off the might.
Despite
these hostilities, the two countries have been close allies ever since the war
ended. Seventy years from the attack, a US aircraft carrier was sent to off the
coast of Fukushima and Miyagi to help the earthquake devastated and radiation threatened
areas by the major earthquake and tsunami deal with the crisis and recover from
the damages. This support operation was called “Operation Tomodachi
(friendship).”
Enjoy
reading and thinking of the hostility and alliance between countries.
