typical example is prison, where there is very limited interaction or
transaction is made with the outside world. Inmates are provided daily
necessities such as food and clothes but nothing fancy. They therefore barter
things that are in demand such as cigarettes, sweets or preserved foods. You
may think cigarettes are the most valued item for exchange as seen in movies
but nowadays, to your surprise, ramen noodles are taking the place. They are
high in calorie, sodium and fat, which offer immediate and lasting satisfaction
where no such junk food is usually served. And according to the researcher, the
less satisfying foods in prison, both in quality and quantity due to budge
shortage, seem to have boosted the value of such instant food.
