Dear MEL School’s
Topic Readers,
In Malaysia, a
dog-petting event riles Muslim clerics
What’s it like to
be disregarded if you touch a dog? That seems to be the situation in Malaysia
where touching dogs is regarded as a taboo by many Malay Muslims who view dogs
as unclean.
But a challenging
event, I-Want-to-Touch-a-Dog, was held by an organizer who tried to remove the
fear of dogs by having the attendees touch and pet the dogs they brought in.
The event drew 800 people, the majority of them were Muslims. The attendees
seem to have been happy to have direct contacts with dogs that they had never had
a chance. They were also taught how to clean their hands after touching dogs.
Enjoy reading and
learning this new move to challenge the religious tradition.
