Dear MEL Topic Readers,
‘Firefighter donkeys’ are helping prevent wildfires from spreading in
Spain
Last year, many parts of Europe were devastated by the most destructive
wildfire season on record, releasing 13 million tons of climate-heating carbon,
burning down CO2-absorbing forests, and threatening health with
smoke. This year, driven by unprecedented heatwaves that swept across the
region, Europe experienced its warmest June on record, and wildfires have
already burned more land in Europe than the annual average over the past two
decades. Firefighters are making their best efforts to contain the wildfires,
but dried-out grasses are fueling and spreading the fires. One idea to prevent
wildfires from spreading is to remove dried grasses around the fire zone
preemptively. And the best and most ecological choice for the remover is
donkeys. Their seemingly limitless appetites graze flammable grasses in
mountains and rural areas quite extensively. In fact, dozens of donkeys are now
deployed across Catalonia to prevent wildfires from occurring, intensifying, or
spreading. Donkeys' appetites are a valuable resource to prevent or contain
wildfires.
