Dear MEL Topic Readers,
‘Miracle baby’ giraffe born at Columbus Zoo
The Masai giraffe has distinctive, jagged, irregular spots on its body.
Masai giraffes live in Kenya and Tanzania but their population declined by over
50% in recent decades because of poaching and habitat loss to just over 30,000
in the wild. They are now listed as endangered by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In the US, over 100 Masai giraffes live in zoos,
and some of the cows have given birth. Recently, a 12-year-old mother Masai
giraffe gave birth to a healthy baby boy after a 15-month gestation. The mother
giraffe is also in good condition. However, the newborn baby will never see his
father because he was euthanized due to chronic health issues last year.
