Topic Reading-Vol.5214-8/3/2026

Dear MEL Topic Readers,
Americans — including many Republicans — are losing faith in capitalism, polling shows
Capitalism and socialism are two distinct economic systems often defined by private ownership, free market, and government control. While capitalism emphasizes individual choice and private property, socialism prioritizes shared wealth and collective ownership. For example, prices are set by supply and demand in a free market under capitalism, whereas the government often sets prices or intervenes in supply and prices under socialism. Today, most countries are run by a mixture of both concepts, depending on their political scheme or ruling bodies. In the USA, republicans claim lower taxes, less regulation, and free enterprise while democrats prioritize fair taxation, government funding for social systems, and worker empowerment, and the difference is often dubbed big government vs small government. However, as inflation surges and the wealth gap widens, Republicans’ political ideology based on free market and pure capitalism seems to be losing public support. Accordingly, criticizing socialism or government interventions doesn’t appeal to their supporters. In the meantime, are Democrats gaining more supporters, or do they represent what most Americans want? To prepare for the midterm elections in November, both parties need to find what appeals to today’s Americans more than their traditional political discipline.
