Dear MEL Topic Readers,
When the Dalai Lama dies, his reincarnation will be a religious crisis.
Dalai Lama isn’t a name but a title given to the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. It has been reincarnated 13 times since 1391 and the 14th and incumbent Dalai Lama is Tenzin Gyatso. He has lived in India as a refugee since 1959 when a revolt against the Chinese occupation failed. Though he’s in good health, he is 85 years old. When he passes away, a search for the next Dalai Lama will begin. It is believed that Dalai Lama’s mindstream is transferred to the intended body of the baby who was born in that year, more known as the reincarnation. Traditionally, the search is conducted by designated Tibetan priests but current Tibet is fully administrated and controlled by China which doesn’t want others to decide the influential spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. Even though Dalai Lama said his exiled office would not seek independence from China for Tibet, the Chinese authority wants someone pro-China to be his successor. Will the next Dalai Lama be reincarnated or appointed?
