Dear MEL Topic Readers,
The coronavirus is crushing India's
Bollywood, the world's most prolific film industry
Bollywood is the Indian Hindi-language film
industry based in Mumbai, which used to be called Bombay. Having been releasing
nearly 2,000 movies annually, Bollywood makes India the world’s largest film
producing country. Last year, India’s box office revenues reached $1.4 billion,
most of which were generated by Indian films. It surely is a big industry that
employs a large number of employees and wage workers and also provides revenues to
movie theaters.
However, cinemas have been shut down since March
25 due to the coronavirus lockdown. They are expected to reopen on May 17 when
the nationwide lockdown expires but under strict social distancing rules. There
will be a vacant seat between each audience, meaning theaters can fill only
half of the seating capacity and generate 50% less revenue. Also, as movie
productions have been on hold, those who work by daily wage have lost their income
for some time. No one knows how long the aftermath of the pandemic will last, Bollywood
is now facing a life-changing crisis.

about this catastrophic damage to India’s film industry.
