Dear MEL School’s
Topic Readers,
'I couldn't move':
Patients who wake up during surgery
It would be much worse
than a most horrifying nightmare; to become conscious during a surgery. It is
called anesthetic awareness. The unfortunate patient doesn’t feel pain physically
but psychologically devastated as his or her mind becomes fully conscious on
the operation flat but the body is fully in asleep. To make the situation even
worse, the surgeon who is performing the operation can hardly recognize the
patient’s awareness. As a result, some of the patients who had such an experience
are badly affected psychologically and could suffer from post-traumatic stress
disorder, or PTSD, for a long time or even ever.
Though, there don’t
seem to be a sure solution to this accidental awareness during surgeries, it
seems to help patients avoid being paralyzed if they are warned or advised that
such awareness could occur but there is no need to worry.
Enjoy reading and
learning about this not-so-rare phenomena during surgeries.
