Dear MEL School’s
Topic Readers,
Hello Kitty at 40:
The cat that conquered the world
The feline has
just turned forty but she is nowhere close to have reached the hilltop. Rather,
she seems to be even getting faster to lead the character marketing race. Unlike
the popular black mouse and his girlfriend do, this pinky cat doesn’t speak or
appear in movies much. Instead, she just appears on well over 50,000 toy
products in 70 countries and brings Sanrio, the copyright holding company, over
$750 million annual revenue.
Why is this
Japanese icon so popular and adored beyond borders, races and cultures?
Enjoy reading and
learning what “kawaii,” means to Japanese and why it’s attractive and
ubiquitous.
