Dear MEL School’s
Topic Readers,
Bolivia law allows
'self-employed children' aged 10 to work
A new law has just
been passed and signed to allow child labor in Bolivia. It is one of the poorest
countries in South America with a population of a little over 10 million.
This new law
clearly breaches the international regulation of minimum working age which is
set by The International Labor Organization. But the president of the country
wants to have a balance between the reality and the international treaties. The
law requires children to attend school and to be self-employed. It is clear now
that having such a law, anyone who violates it could be punished harshly, which
in turn might reduce the number of illegal child labors.
Enjoy reading and
thinking if such a law would protect children or not.
